Determining best practice for safe discharge of the older emergency patient.

Study 2

Focus Groups

The aim of Study 2 is to identify any barriers or enablers to best practice that may exist amongst clinicians caring for older people in the ED and Acute Medical Unit (AMU).

The focus group is a qualitative research method for eliciting descriptive data from population subgroups.  This study will use focus groups to explore attitudes and beliefs surrounding barriers and enablers to effective management of older emergency patients in order to develop an understanding of the perspectives of doctors and other health professionals on the topic.

Groups of staff from the medical, nursing and allied health service disciplines from ED and AMU will be invited to participate. Focus groups for physicians, registrars, senior nurses, junior nurses and allied staff will be conducted separately. The primary data collection technique is the focus group and the discussion generated from the focus group session.
